Home care or home health?

Home care is help with everyday life: bathing, dressing, meals, rides and company. You usually pay by the hour; long-term care insurance or Medicaid programs (Medi-Cal in California) sometimes help. Home health is skilled nursing and therapy ordered by a doctor, often after a hospital stay, and Medicare can cover it.

Before you hire

Check with the state that the agency's license is still current (license status here is from the state's file and can be out of date), and ask how they screen and train the caregiver they send. In California, look the caregiver up on the Home Care Aide Registry. Ask about the minimum visit, weekend and night rates, and what happens when the caregiver is sick.
