Home care or home health?
Home care is help with everyday life: bathing, dressing, meals, rides and company. You usually pay by the hour; long-term care insurance or Medi-Cal programs sometimes help. Home health is skilled nursing and therapy ordered by a doctor, often after a hospital stay, and Medicare can cover it.

Before you hire
Check the agency's license is still current with California's Community Care Licensing (license status here is from the state's file and can be out of date), and look up the caregiver they send on the Home Care Aide Registry. Ask about the minimum visit, weekend and night rates, and what happens when the caregiver is sick.
