What the types mean
Assisted living
A licensed community (California calls it a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly) with 7 or more residents. Help with daily living, meals and medications; not round-the-clock nursing.
Board and care home
A licensed home for 6 or fewer older adults (also a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly). Smaller, homier, often with a higher staff-to-resident ratio.
Continuing care community
A campus with several levels of care, from independent living to assisted living and often nursing care, usually under a long-term contract.
Nursing home
A skilled nursing facility with 24-hour nursing care, certified by Medicare and/or Medicaid. CMS rates every one on inspections, staffing and quality.
